About PTE Academic

PTE Academic is an English language test for international students; it is widely available and offers fast results.  The test is recognised by over 95% of universities and colleges in the UK.

PTE Academic is approved by the UK Border Agency (UKBA) for Tier 4 (student visa) applications when students are required to demonstrate English language competency at a minimum of CEFR level B1 or B2.  It is also accepted for Tier 2 applications.

PTE Academic measures your language ability by testing your level of English through tasks which reflect real-life settings.

How it works

If you are not taking one of our preparation courses before your PTE Academic exam, please visit Pearson, so that you know what to expect when you arrive at the centre.

The PTE Academic exam is 3 hours long, computer based and split into timed sections.  When the time has finished for the section, the test will automatically move on.

There are 20 different types of task.  Some tasks will test more than one skill at the same time e.g. reading and speaking.

1. Introduction: We ask you to introduce yourself. This section is not part of the exam (no time limit)
2. Speaking and Writing (77-93 minutes)
3. Reading (32-41 minutes)
4. Break: This break is optional (10 minutes)
5. Listening (45-57 minutes)

The timings shown are variable.  The test will always last 3 hours in total.

Please arrive no more than 30 minutes before your scheduled exam and bring 2 valid forms of identification, one of which must have an embedded photo and signature: passport, UK drivers license or UK Biometric Residence Permit.  The second form of id must contain your signature.  If we are unable to confirm your identity, we may be unable to admit you for your test.

No personal belongings are allowed in the testing room, including items such as coats, watches, purses or large pieces of jewellery.  Your personal belongings will be stored in a locker at the testing centre, so please do not bring large items such a backpacks or briefcases as we may not be able to accommodate them.
